A starter guide for getting settled near Hayes Valley / Alamo Square when moving to San Francisco.

Hayes Valley is best treated as a walkable home base: coffee, food, bars, culture, parks, and quick access to Lower Haight, Divisadero/NoPa, Civic Center, Mission, Castro, and Japantown/Fillmore.

  • Hayes Street corridor — default walk for restaurants, coffee, boutiques, and exploring without an agenda.

  • All Star Cafe — possible late/early utilitarian option; verify hours before relying on it.

  • Suppenküche — German restaurant / beer hall; good with friends.
  • Kate’s Kitchen — brunch / breakfast / comfort food near Lower Haight.
  • Son & Garden — trendier brunch/dinner option near Polk.
  • Try-one-per-week rule: for the first 8 weeks, try one new Hayes Valley restaurant or bar each week.
